Jenny When a tool is supposed to help you feel better, how do you know it is not quietly making things harder?
Davis I usually notice late, because the feed feels like a breather until I look up and feel weirdly emptied out.
Jenny And I don't love calling that a choice if the buttons, alerts, and endless scroll are built to keep tugging your sleeve.
Davis Right, because there's a difference between flow, where you're absorbed in something you meant to do, and the zone, where the design keeps you moving after the point is gone.

Jenny This week we analyzed two thousand nine hundred seventy-six hits and kept one hundred twenty-six qualified papers. That’s about four hundred unique authors across thirty-eight countries, so the feed is broad, but the final pile is pretty selective.
Davis And the weird part is the squeeze. Qualified papers fell from one hundred thirty-six to one hundred twenty-six, down about seven percent, while total hits jumped from one thousand seven hundred sixty-five to two thousand nine hundred seventy-six, up about sixty-nine percent.
Jenny So what’s driving that? My guess is noisier search territory: artificial intelligence, technology, and digital health are broad labels, and this week the strongest methods were qualitative studies at thirty-nine and surveys at twenty-seven, not a flood of clean trials.
Davis The map widened though. Country coverage rose from twenty-six to thirty-eight countries, while unique authors dropped from five hundred twenty-nine to four hundred twenty-one. Malaysia had five papers, Nigeria and China had four each, and Indonesia and the U.S. had three.
Jenny The author mix is pretty balanced. One hundred thirty-five were first-time authors, meaning their first-ever paper in the metadata, not just new to us. Another one hundred fifty-eight were emerging researchers, and one hundred twenty-eight were experienced.
Davis Theme-wise, mental health and artificial intelligence tied at eleven papers each, with technology at eight and virtual reality and digital health at six. That fits the through-line: wellbeing isn’t just screen time. It’s design, social context, and whether a human system is wrapped around the tool.

Jenny Alright, let's get into the papers with Trapped in “the Zone,” a twenty-twenty-six review by Dominique Kelly and Victoria L. Rubin in the Canadian journal of information and library science.
Jenny Their argument is sharper than “social media distracts us.” They say some feeds use attention-capture dark patterns, meaning design tricks that steer behavior without making the steering obvious, and those tricks can pull people into a low-agency zone state.
Jenny That zone is not flow. Flow is the good kind of absorption, where your skill meets a real challenge, while the zone here is long scrolling with low challenge, low skill, little effort, and not much intrinsic reward.
Davis How would we actually tell the difference between a user choosing to scroll and a design pattern steering them there?
Jenny They don't run a new real-time experiment, which matters. They synthesize human-computer interaction research and psychology research, then build an explanatory model for how infinite feeds, attention hooks, and weak stopping cues absorb attention while reducing agency.
Davis So the evidence is more map than measurement, but the practical takeaway is big. If design shapes wellbeing, then digital wellbeing can't just mean “log off”; platforms could also build for agency, challenge, and actual reward instead of leaving people mildly stunned at the bottom of a feed.

Paper 2 Children's social connections, internet usage and mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Global South: evidence from Disrupting Harm.

Davis That agency question from the feed paper gets a lot harder when the user is a teenager in a lockdown, so this one is Children's social connections, internet usage and mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Global South, from Metherell, Kurten, Ghai, Ploubidis, Moreno-Agostino, and Orben.
Davis They looked at eleven thousand nine hundred twelve internet-using children, ages twelve to seventeen, across twelve countries including Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, Uganda, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam, and the anti-hot-take result is that internet use and social connection did not have one clear overall relationship with mental health during lockdown.
Jenny If the average effect is that unclear, what should a parent in Nairobi or a policymaker in Phnom Penh actually pay attention to, besides the usual screen-time number?
Davis The authors used the UNICEF Innocenti Disrupting Harm survey, ran robust linear and logistic regressions, meaning they compared wellbeing scores and risk indicators while adjusting for things like socioeconomic status and demographics, and they also handled missing answers with multiple imputation, but because it's cross-sectional, a snapshot at one point in time, it can't prove internet use caused any mental health outcome.
Jenny So the practical message is Context Beats Averages: a single global rule like “less internet equals better mental health” is too blunt for twelve countries, different lockdown rules, gender, urbanicity, and family situations, even though this is still a pretty substantial dataset rather than a tiny convenience sample.

Paper 3 Effectiveness of wearable device-based interventions on improving depression, anxiety, stress, and quality of life in adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Jenny That word “context” matters here too, but this paper gives us a cleaner test than a pandemic snapshot: Meiqi Wang and colleagues published Effectiveness of wearable device-based interventions on improving depression, anxiety, stress, and quality of life in adults in Journal of Affective Disorders in twenty twenty-six. They pulled together thirty-two randomized trials, so people were assigned to a wearable-based intervention or a control group rather than just observed after the fact.
Jenny The headline is surprisingly strong: across three thousand sixty-one adults, with an average age of fifty-one point six, wearables were linked with better depression, anxiety, and quality of life. Depression moved by a standardized mean difference of minus zero point four three, anxiety by minus zero point four nine, and quality of life by plus zero point four one; standardized mean difference just means they converted different questionnaires onto one common scale so the trials could be pooled.
Davis But are the devices doing the work, or are they just the wrist-sized nudge that keeps someone walking, sleeping, or checking in with a broader behavioral program?
Jenny That’s the right caution. This is a meta-analysis, a study of studies, and they searched PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane for English-language randomized controlled trials through August thirty-first, twenty twenty-five. They used random-effects pooling, meaning they assumed the thirty-two trials were not identical, and the sensitivity checks still supported the results, but the pooled effects come from different populations and different intervention designs, with stronger depression effects in European studies and in people with metabolic conditions.
Davis So my takeaway for the Wearables And Chronic Care thread is not, buy a tracker and treat your depression. It’s, if a clinician is already helping someone change sleep, movement, or routines, a wearable can be an adjunct, basically a feedback loop people may actually live with, and this paper has randomized evidence behind that hope.
