Paper 2 Bodies on Display: A Scoping Review of Appearance-Focused Social Media, Body Image, Self-Esteem, and Psychological Wellbeing in Adolescent Girls and Young Women

Jenny That curriculum point matters, because the next paper is basically the messy world that curriculum has to prepare kids for: Bodies on Display, a review of appearance-focused social media and body image in girls and young women.
Jenny Marano and colleagues looked across fifty-eight studies from twenty-fourteen to twenty-twenty-six, with female samples aged ten to thirty. The plain finding is pretty steady: more engagement with appearance-heavy feeds is linked with worse body image, lower self-esteem, and more negative mood, especially through comparison, beauty-ideal pressure, and self-objectification, which means learning to see your own body mainly as something other people judge.
Davis So how much of this is about social media itself, and how much is about comparison and appearance ideals that were already there, just turbocharged by the feed?
Jenny That’s the right split. This is a scoping review, meaning it maps what studies exist rather than combining them into one pooled effect size, and the authors searched PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science under PRISMA-ScR rules, then summarized quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods studies descriptively. The evidence points in the same direction, but it’s uneven: Australia and the United States dominate, outcomes are measured in different ways, and only nine studies focused on adolescents aged ten to seventeen, so the youngest girls are thinner in the evidence than the headline suggests.
Davis That makes the guardrails feel very concrete. If the mechanism is comparison and ideal internalization, prevention can’t just say, spend less time online; it has to teach girls how the image machine works, and it has to make room for protective content like body positive and body neutrality material, even if the evidence is still more map than verdict.

Davis That last point about not just telling girls to spend less time online is the bridge here, because this paper asks what support looks like for young people who already get missed by generic mental health tools. It’s called Use of technology to support children and young people at increased risk of mental health problems, by S. Liverpool and colleagues, in Mental Health and Digital Technologies.
Davis The plain finding is hopeful but not simple. They screened eight thousand eight hundred thirty-one records and included one hundred twenty-five studies, covering one hundred sixteen digital mental health technologies for marginalized or disadvantaged young people, including neurodivergent youth, LGBTQIA two-spirit plus communities, care-experienced kids, justice-involved kids, young people affected by migration, and young people living with low income.
Jenny If fewer than half of these tools were actually accessible at the time of review, how useful is this evidence for real services right now?
Davis That’s the catch. This was a systematic scoping review, meaning the authors searched widely and mapped what exists rather than calculating one pooled treatment effect, and they searched PsycINFO, CINAHL, MEDLINE, Scopus, and Cochrane in January twenty twenty-five, with extra checks in Google Scholar and reference lists. They also registered the protocol and consulted young people, carers, practitioners, and experts, but only thirty-four percent of the tools involved young people in the design phase, only forty-one percent were accessible, and the evidence was thin on cost-efficiency and safety.
Jenny So the support is moderate, not magic-wand strong. I’d read this as a guardrails paper: don’t scale a mental health app for at-risk kids just because it looks acceptable in a study; co-produce it, keep it reachable after the grant ends, and prove it’s safe for the exact young people it claims to serve.
