Davis Partal’s plain claim is that some digital mental well-being tools sell emotional self-management back to people through mood diaries, chatbots, meditations, mindfulness content, and personalized recommendations. The jargon is “commodified emotions,” meaning feelings become products, and she argues that this can reinforce gendered expectations that women, especially, should smooth over discomfort with calm and positivity.
Jenny What evidence would convince us this is more than a critique of bad branding? Did she actually look inside products, or is this mostly a theory argument about the wellness industry?
Davis She does both, but not with a big user sample. Davis Was this measuring better health outcomes, like sleep or hot flashes, or mainly a change in how women felt about menopause?
Jenny Mainly how they felt and thought about it. The authors used the ATM Scale, which is just a standardized questionnaire for attitudes toward menopause, before and after eight weeks; thirty women were randomized to the app group and thirty to control, by lottery method, then the analysis compared post-test scores while accounting for baseline differences.
Jenny So the randomized design helps a lot, but I wouldn't overstate it. The sample was small, and the women were recruited by convenience sampling, which means they were available to the researchers rather than drawn to represent all postmenopausal women in Iran.
Davis That lands differently from the commodified-emotions paper. Here, the practical takeaway is that a structured app can be an education layer beside routine care, not a replacement for care, and the design-after-adoption question is whether women would actually keep using it once the eight-week study ends.
