Davis This week's map is a little smaller, but still busy: 2,076 records analyzed, 104 qualified papers, and 374 authors across 26 countries. So about one in twenty papers made it through, which is a useful reminder that the feed starts wide before it gets selective.
Jenny And it's down. Qualified papers fell from 118 to 104, so 14 fewer, an 11.9 percent drop. The data doesn't tell us whether that is a quieter publication week, a topic shift, or the filter biting harder, so I wouldn't turn that into a wellbeing trend yet.
Davis The search pool shrank even more: 2,445 hits last time to 2,076 now, down 369, or 15.1 percent. Countries dipped from 29 to 26 too, with India at 4 papers and China and the Philippines at 3 each, so the conversation is still global, just a little less spread out.
Jenny The methods lean close-to-the-ground this week: 24 qualitative papers and 18 surveys, ahead of 12 quantitative studies and 8 case studies. Plainly, a lot of authors are asking people what tech does to their work, care, and attention, not just pulling platform traces.
Davis Theme-wise, AI dominates twice over because the tags split Artificial Intelligence and artificial intelligence, at 14 and 10. Then mental health and digital technology both show 5, which fits the through-line: access is the promise, but attention, relationships, labor, and care are the governance problem.
Jenny The author mix is worth hearing too: out of 374 authors, 89 are first-time, meaning their first-ever paper in the metadata, not just first time in our feed. Another 158 are emerging, and 127 are experienced, so this isn't only senior labs defining the tech-and-wellbeing conversation.

Jenny Alright, let's get into the papers with a big table-setter: Alexander Guerrero's Longtermism, Technology, and Well-Being, in Utilitas in twenty twenty-six.
Jenny Guerrero takes aim at a core longtermist move, where longtermism means giving huge moral weight to people and other sentient beings in the far future. Think William MacAskill's claim that technological stagnation, basically getting stuck near today's level, could be one of the major threats to future wellbeing.
Davis So what's the evidence that more technology has stopped improving wellbeing, rather than just improving it unevenly or creating new problems alongside real gains?
Jenny That's the key pressure point, because this isn't a dataset paper with a sample size or an effect estimate. Guerrero is doing theoretical ethics, using historical evidence and argument to say past gains from technology don't prove future gains, and the provocative part is that longterm ethics might require the capacity to slow down, stop, or even roll back some technologies.
Jenny The limit is right there too: it's a serious challenge to the story of automatic progress, but it doesn't tell us where the turning point is, or how we'd measure that point in hospitals, schools, workplaces, or climate systems.
Davis That makes the practical test pretty sharp: don't ask whether a technology is advanced, ask what wellbeing outcome it improves, who bears the downside, and what governance exists if it doesn't work. That's the connection-needs-friction theme in its biggest form: sometimes the humane design choice is a brake, not a launch button.

Paper 2 Implementing Caring Technologies and Social Mobilisation for Older Adults: A Mixed-Methods Evaluation Across Seven European Case Studies

Davis That brake-versus-launch-button idea gets a gentler test here, because Implementing Caring Technologies and Social Mobilisation for Older Adults asks what happens when the technology comes with neighbors, groups, and support, not just a device in a box.
Davis Across seven pilot sites in Belgium, France, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, Toni Wright and colleagues evaluated older-adult programs that paired caring technologies with social mobilisation, meaning digital or assistive tools on one side and community connection on the other. The plain finding is hopeful: some participants reported better confidence managing their own health, what researchers call self-efficacy, and better mental health, with positive movement in digital literacy and online health-seeking too.
Jenny So here's my question: how much of that benefit came from the technology, and how much came from having people around who made the technology feel usable?
Davis That's exactly the right split, and the study can't fully separate it because it was a mixed-methods case-study evaluation, meaning they combined numbers with interviews and site-level stories rather than running one clean randomized test. They surveyed one hundred eighty-seven people at baseline and one hundred five at endpoint over about eighteen months, then added focus groups and Photovoice, where participants use photos to show what changed in their daily lives, and the big caution is that the endpoint group was smaller, so retention matters.
Jenny That makes the takeaway more practical than flashy: for older adult wellbeing, access is not adoption, and a tablet or sensor probably works best when someone trusted helps turn it into a habit, a conversation, or a reason to leave the house.

Paper 3 Examining the Social and Mental Health Benefits of Virtual and In-Person Physical Activity Intervention Among Postsecondary Students: Quasi-Experimental Study

Jenny That retention point from the older-adult study is a nice bridge, because this one asks a cleaner campus version of the same access question: if students can't show up in person, does the support still work? The paper is Examining the Social and Mental Health Benefits of Virtual and In-Person Physical Activity Intervention Among Postsecondary Students, by M. deJonge and colleagues in JMIR Mental Health.
Jenny They studied physically inactive postsecondary students who were already experiencing mental ill health, and put them in a six-week structured, supervised physical activity program. The practical surprise is that both formats helped: the in-person sample had eighty-seven students, the virtual sample had sixty-two, and outcomes improved across anxiety, depression, social inclusion, and well-being with P less than point zero zero one, which means the changes were very unlikely to be random noise.
Davis Were students moving more, feeling more connected, or both, because those are different interventions hiding under the same exercise label?
Jenny Both, at least as the authors measured it. They collected before-and-after surveys across three phases, then used paired t tests, which compare the same students before and after, plus hierarchical regression, which asks whether changes in symptoms and social connection predicted changes in well-being; and the delivery-mode interaction wasn't significant, meaning virtual didn't look meaningfully weaker than in-person over time. The big caution is that this was quasi-experimental, so not a clean random assignment trial, and it was a specific group of students already struggling with mental health, not proof for every campus population.
Davis That's useful in a very campus-health way: don't treat the Zoom workout as a sad backup plan. If it's supervised, structured, and built to create social inclusion, it can be part of the real menu, but it's the same thread again: access is not adoption, because a link to a class isn't the same as a program students trust enough to keep attending.
