The plain finding is hopeful but pretty blunt. Teachers liked the idea of using art and local culture to help young children move into primary school, and Art Integrated Learning means teaching ordinary school content through things like drawing, storytelling, music, dance, crafts, and making. Indigenous Knowledge here means local cultural practices, like weaving, oral stories, and community arts, treated as classroom knowledge rather than decoration.

But the gap is huge. Sixty percent of the teachers said they had limited knowledge of Art Integrated Learning, and eighty percent had never had formal training in it, even though ninety percent thought it could bridge traditional and modern education and eighty percent thought it could strengthen children’s cultural connection.

So if teachers already believe in the idea, what is actually stopping it from reaching children in the classroom?

The authors used a qualitative design, meaning they looked for patterns in people’s accounts rather than testing a numerical intervention, and they ran semi-structured interviews, which are guided conversations with room for follow-up questions. Teachers pointed to weak professional preparation, few materials, poor infrastructure, and not much institutional guidance, but the study used convenience sampling in one district, so I’d treat it as a grounded local picture, not a national map of India.

It’s not enough to tell a teacher, please honor weaving, songs, and stories; the system has to hand them training time, lesson models, materials, and permission, or cultural responsiveness becomes another nice phrase sitting on top of an under-resourced classroom.
