Davis The author pool is pretty mixed, which matters for where the field is getting ideas. Of 333 authors, 81 are first-time authors, meaning first-ever paper in the database count, 123 are emerging, and 129 are experienced; that's about a quarter, a little over a third, and just under two-fifths.

Jenny That logging-off point lands differently when the design tool is literally on your face: Dheeraj Sharma and Tanya Singh have a 2026 European Journal of Marketing paper called Examining the impact of augmented reality face filters on consumers’ self-concept and well-being, and it asks what happens after a Snapchat-style beauty filter shows you a smoother, sharper, more ideal version of yourself.
Jenny Their model says the risky part is the comparison: using AR face filters widened the gap between how attractive people thought they actually were and how attractive they wished they were.
Jenny In self-discrepancy theory, that gap is the distance between your real self and your ideal self, and in this paper a bigger ideal-actual attractiveness gap was linked to more psychological discomfort, higher propensity toward cosmetic surgery, and lower self-acceptance.
Davis So is the harm coming from the filter itself, or from comparing the filtered face to your real one afterward?

Haoyu Wang, Yen-Kung Lin, Siyu Zhang, Bowen Zheng, and Shaohai Jiang published it in Patient Education and Counseling in twenty twenty-six.
Davis The plain finding is a split screen. In data from one thousand two hundred seventy-eight adults age sixty and older, telehealth use was linked with better perceived quality of care, while health-related social media use was linked with worse perceived quality of care.
Jenny What exactly did they count as quality of care here, and is social media actually making people feel worse about care, or is it just where frustrated patients go after long waits and confusing information?
Davis Quality of care is perceived quality, so it's the older adult's own rating of the care they got, not a chart review or a clinical outcome. The authors used HINTS seven survey data and path analysis, which is a model for tracing how barriers connect to tools like telehealth and then to outcomes, and they found offline barriers like long wait times were tied to more telehealth use, while offline, functional, and socioeconomic barriers were tied to more health-related social media use. But the big limit is exactly your question: this maps associations, and it can't prove social media caused poorer perceived care.
Jenny That's the Health Communication Tradeoffs thread in miniature. Build age-friendly telehealth, yes, but don't leave a sixty-eight-year-old with hearing trouble, transportation trouble, and a confusing portal to crowdsource medical help in a Facebook group and then act surprised when care feels worse.
