In On the Dual Side of Personality Traits, Rizvi and colleagues look at five hundred sixty-eight adults in Arab and UK samples and ask whether the same kind of person can get both connection and trouble from social media.

In the Arab sample, three hundred nine people, higher neuroticism, meaning more emotional sensitivity and stress reactivity, predicted both social wellbeing on social media and social media disorder, which here means compulsive use that interferes with daily life but not a formal diagnosis. In the UK sample, two hundred fifty-nine people, the trait doing that double work was conscientiousness, meaning being organized and self-controlled.
Jenny If the same trait can point toward both benefit and harm, what exactly are we measuring when we say social media is good or bad?
Davis They split the Arab and UK groups and ran multivariate multiple linear regressions, which is a way to test several predictors against several outcomes at once while keeping the outcomes separate. So they weren't just asking whether personality predicts heavy use; they were asking whether the Big Five traits predict both feeling supported and belonging online, and showing signs of problematic use. The big caution is that it's cross-sectional, one snapshot in time, so it maps patterns but can't tell us whether the trait drives the behavior, the platform experience reshapes the person, or both are moving together.
Jenny That makes the practical advice feel more adult, honestly. A digital wellbeing tool that tells everyone to log off at nine misses the point if one person is using social media to feel less alone, while another is getting pulled into compulsive checking by the same trait profile. This is the digital social tradeoff in miniature: the risk and the support can live in the same user.
