Jenny Were these bedrooms objectively measured, or were participants reporting what bothered them?
Davis Both the sleep and the room story matter here, but they're measured differently. Participants wore wrist actigraphs, which are watch-like movement sensors used to estimate sleep timing and awakenings, and they filled out daily reports on whether temperature, light, or noise disrupted the previous night. The authors used multilevel models, meaning they compared differences between people and changes within the same person across nights, but the bedroom conditions were self-reported disruptions, so this captures lived experience more than instrument-measured room temperature, decibels, or lux.
Jenny That makes me take the sleep signal more seriously than a one-time survey, because two weeks of wrist data is a lot better than asking someone to remember last month. But I'd still call the claim modest: for young adults, sleep advice shouldn't stop at caffeine and bedtime routines; it should include a fan, blackout curtains, earplugs, or fixing the radiator, which is very much the Health in Built Places thread in pajama form.
